Hiked up from the Black Mountain Campground. Saw many who drove up at the summit. I'm not a big fan of developed summits at all but it is still a beautiful area and range. Saw a couple of red-spotted newts in the red eft phase; such a cool little critter.
Hiked up the Mt. Mitchell trail from Black Mountain campground. Beautiful day but the bugs were really bad at the summit. Overall, a great hike.
Lot's of people. Took the 3/4 mi nature trail down. Ethereal. In my top two so far.
Hiked up from Black Mountain Campground. It was sunny and bright, then an hour in a bad thunderstorm hit. By the time I hit the summit it was clear again. I was the only one on the trail, but there were quite a few people at the top. Overall great day.
Second time visiting this highpoint. Came out to see the newly built up top. I liked the older lookout tower better, just had a more rustic feel. New one is still nice though.
Hiked from black mt campground. Great weather. Trail well marked and easy to follow.
Fourth of a 6 state HP weekend. Flew into Knoxville, then hit the HPs for TN, GA, SC, NC, KY and VA. This is my 43rd state HP. A bit foggy but I had the summit to myself.
Climbed the long way from Black Mountains Campground up the Mitchell trail. Only saw six people on the trail either coming or going, but saw 50+ at the top.
I trudged through snow for two hours on my wife's birthday (and got in mucho trouble later for affected negligence)but it was totally worth it. Nice trail, great views, and almost complete solitude. I hope to hike this one many times over and hit some of the neighboring peaks as well.
I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO HIKING THIS MOUNTAIN AFTER I RETURN FROM AFGHANISTAN!
With lesdubois. Took the Mt Mitchell Trail from the Black Mt. Recreation area. Few people on the trail, but lots of people on the summit.
Climbed after hiking from the parking lot to Deep Gap and back.
On a dayhike. Craig and Big Tom included.
June 2002, in my early days as a hiker, I drove along the Parkway and hiked lots of trails. This one was a doddle, but worth the views.
Favorite highpoint of the trip by far!! Absolutely loved the drive. The trees were frosted from an earlier storm and it was really windy and super cold on top. I was also surprised to see the resting spot of Elisha Mitchell. I don't know why I never ran across that info. But I'm super jealous he gets to be buried on top a mountain he loves.
Easter backpacking trip with RamblinWreck. Hiked up the southern side trail. Last time I bring crappy food on a lazy trip.
Spent Easter up in God's creation, still had some solid snow on the ground with some fairly large snow drifts (for NC). The "climb" up and down was nice and clear, great hike.
Awesome drive in to Mt. Mitchell SP. Drove up to the parking lot and took the short trail up to the summit. Kind of a gray day but there were still great views and it actually made some of the pictures more interesting. Loved the rhododendrons which were just starting to bloom. Photo-ops everywhere! Can't wait to come back and hike more of the trails when I have more time. This was # 3 of 6 State HPs I did in a 3 day span.
Drove up to lot at top... but did my obligatory 1000 ft climb down (Sea-to-Summit) then back to the top.... (Was foggy and cold... no real view to be had...)
