Drove to the top of Mitchell with "the old folks" and my brother. Frost in the trees made an awesome scenery. Hiked to Mt. Craig and Big Tom and back.
Two hours and fifty minutes to the summit from Black Mountain Campground in driving rain. This was my third trip up and the only time I had the trail to myself the entire day. On sunny days the top will have crowds so be aware but the snack bar at the parking lot has reasonable prices and good hot cider if you visit from May to October.
...We drove most of the way up, then walked. Does that count? I guess it would matter if I cared about state highpoints, which I don't. I remember the view being sweet, and thinking, "I'm up higher than anyone east of the Mississippi!"
Climbed the Old Mitchell Trail which is 4miles round trip of moderate hiking fun. Highpoint #19
Foggy and cool.
There was rime ice.
Long but easy and nice hike to summit from Black Mtn. Campground. Decent weather but humid.
A friend and I did a point-to-point hike, climbing many peaks along the way and finishing atop Mt. Mitchell. I should do it again some day...
Hiked up from the Black Mountain Campground. Saw many who drove up at the summit. I'm not a big fan of developed summits at all but it is still a beautiful area and range. Saw a couple of red-spotted newts in the red eft phase; such a cool little critter.
Hiked up the Mt. Mitchell trail from Black Mountain campground. Beautiful day but the bugs were really bad at the summit. Overall, a great hike.
Lot's of people. Took the 3/4 mi nature trail down. Ethereal. In my top two so far.
Hiked up from Black Mountain Campground. It was sunny and bright, then an hour in a bad thunderstorm hit. By the time I hit the summit it was clear again. I was the only one on the trail, but there were quite a few people at the top. Overall great day.
Second time visiting this highpoint. Came out to see the newly built up top. I liked the older lookout tower better, just had a more rustic feel. New one is still nice though.
Hiked from black mt campground. Great weather. Trail well marked and easy to follow.
Fourth of a 6 state HP weekend. Flew into Knoxville, then hit the HPs for TN, GA, SC, NC, KY and VA. This is my 43rd state HP. A bit foggy but I had the summit to myself.
Climbed the long way from Black Mountains Campground up the Mitchell trail. Only saw six people on the trail either coming or going, but saw 50+ at the top.
I trudged through snow for two hours on my wife's birthday (and got in mucho trouble later for affected negligence)but it was totally worth it. Nice trail, great views, and almost complete solitude. I hope to hike this one many times over and hit some of the neighboring peaks as well.
I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO HIKING THIS MOUNTAIN AFTER I RETURN FROM AFGHANISTAN!
With lesdubois. Took the Mt Mitchell Trail from the Black Mt. Recreation area. Few people on the trail, but lots of people on the summit.
Climbed after hiking from the parking lot to Deep Gap and back.
