HP #46From Massie Gap. Saw 3 groups of wild ponies, and boy is the AT rugged along here. Us west coasters get spoiled by the good trail maintenance we have. I started bagging state highpoints in 1985. Summited this one while on my 8000-mile Great American Road Trip, in which I bagged the last 5 of my 49 state high points. Decided 12 years ago to forego Alasaka, I'd much rather go to Nepal if I can go on another 3 week climb somewhere. Coincidentally the destination of our road trip was my 40th college reunion at M.I.T., the college founded by William Barton Rogers for whom the peak is named.

Via A.T. Branch TrailSummit hidden in trees...the route over Wilburn Ridge makes up for the lack of views on top. Spectacular open country.

"Do you like PONIES???"To call the ponies "wild" would be a vast overstatement. The adults were about as tame as could be, although the baby ponies were skittish. Within the first mile, a woman accidentally knocked a large rock loose and it landed on one of my toes. Rather than focus on the pain and let swelling take hold, I sped up and let the circulation continue. As a result, I summited within 1h15m, passing every other day-hiker also ascending. My toe gradually felt better, and I proceeded to explore miles of other trails near the area. Highly recommended hike, and I want to go back.
I met another State Highpointer ("Bob") and tried to give him directions to Black Mountain (KY), which he planned to attempt the next day. I hope he made it. For me, Mount Rogers was State Highpoint #36 reached overall.

Great area to camp out. The big plus was having spring water by the camp site.
...Jimmy! The pony is trying to run off with your jacket. :)

HP # 16My wife and I hiked this one via the Appalachian Trail. Very beautiful and enjoyable hike. Unfortunately the highpoint was in the trees, but the views along the way more than made up for it.

From Elk GardenThis was a solo trip to climb some state highpoints in the mid Atlantic states. Amazingly I had the summit to myself on a beautiful day. This was my second attempt having aborted an initial climb after being drenched in heavy rains over 10 years earlier.

HP #21 - Beautiful parkIt was a mostly cloudy day, and I went as fast as possible because of the possibility of PM thunderstorms (none came). Beautiful open scenery (until you reach the top) - it was like a reverse tree line. Nice people on the trail, too.

Great HP in Virginia #30Love this one! First cool, then rain, then sunny and hot. The trail was nice and varied, at times rugged & at times smooth. The ponies were sweet; the rhododendron were bright and smelled like peaches; the bee buzz was soothing. The only blemish was the actual HP. Two identical markers on two different rocks. Huh?

20th state highpointBeautiful warm day. Hiked up the Appalachian trail and back from Elk Garden Trailhead. Several people on the trail but I had the top to myself. 3.5 hours round trip. Special thanks to the local guys I met on the way out that gave me good directions on how to avoid the traffic on the way to Clingmans Dome, my next highpoint later this day.

Elk GardernClimbed up from the Elk Garden Trailhead. Nice hike and way to start my HP road trip in the Appalachians. A slight dusting of snow on the summit and its surrounding area this time of year.

boulderingive hiked nearly every trail in the mount rogers area, but i would like to comment on the bouldering potential it has. nearly every peak houses loads of boulders and ive established many probems from v-0 to v-6 grades. even on the road leading up to the park and at the visiters center have amazing areas with untold potential. ill be posting more about the climbing here as i climb and complete more projects.

Ponies and BouldersHiked up from Grayson Highlands SP - took us over 6 hours. Loved the "wild" ponies and side detoured to scramble on many boulders. Clear day with great views. A really fun highpoint - glad there isn't a road to the top.

Cold!We camped in a car campsite the first night as we got there late, and woke up snowed in our tents. That wasn't exactly what we were expecting in southern VA.
The sky cleared up though, and it was beautiful hiking through the snow covered highlands. Some windier areas lacked snow cover, and the ground was frozen. The thermometer stayed below 25 F.
I went again in the summertime, and it was hot! Saw some wild ponies on that trip as well.

Beautiful, both timesI hiked up (packless, being lazy) while doing a section from Trail Days. Amazing how it's an island of cool pine forest surrounded by high open country.
Did the hike again in August 2006 with my wife. This time I noticed the USGS summit marker atop a rock.
