Hiked from guitar lake in the middle of the night. Made it in time to watch the sun rise over the White mountains. COLD!
Summited Whitney via the Whitney Trail with two friends in a 15-hour push. Left Whitney Portal at 3am, summited by noon, back down by 6pm.
Do not let people fool you, the trail after Trail Crest is still a long, dispiriting slog to the summit
Second attempt this time up the mountaineers route. Much more interesting than the trail.
Up the Whitney Trail. Weather and failure to acclimate turned us back.
Cruised up the trail and then took a snowy shortcut up the chute towards the top. That last half mile of the trail goes on forever! Great success!!
Come for the rock climbing, stay because you're trashed after climbing Whitney without acclimatizing
Trails were mostly clear of snow until Consultation Lake. We (and most groups) used crampons from High Camp to Trail Crest, taking them off at high camp for a bit before putting them back on once more for a few snowy stretches on the back side. A few people used microspikes but were slipping and not having a great time. There is one well-worn glissade path and people were starting from the very top of Trail Crest when the snow had softened enough.
Finally won the lottery on the 4th year! -Climbed Mountaineers route in 1 day, very long and strenuous push above Upper Boy Scout Lake, Beware: 6100' gain over 15.8 miles in 1 day gave hiking partner (native CO 14er finisher) altitude sickness
Did my first hike up this alone and got caught in a snow storm at the top. Despite some route finding issues on descent it wad a crazy fun time. I’ve only climbed/hiked it during off season so I can’t comment on it with the crowds but I think if you can get there it should be a must do.
Preseason climb. Relatively inexperienced group and early year conditions made summiting dangerous, although we did get through the real meat of the hike. Crampons and Ice axes were essential in this attempt and made it a real experience.
Enjoyed the day hike with a group of friends. Took 18 hours to complete and well worth the long day. The sun was out and the weather was cool. Perfect conditions.

Left the car at 4am and came back at 2pm, endlessly grateful, happy and also a bit tired...
I was lucky enough to climb this mountain on the most gorgeous and clear autumn day one can imagine.
The moment you reach "trail crest" (all alone), when the view opens towards west and you admire the reflections of those rocky summits in the lower-laying lakes goes straight into the heart.
A day I won´t forget.
Exact date uncertain. On Kathy Reichardt's suggestion we climbed the East Face route. Hiking up the regular trail to Mirror Lake, where we camped. Rising early to travel cross country, climbing over Pinnacle Ridge to Iceberg Lake. It started snowing lightly when we reached the Grand Staircase. After summiting we hiked down the trail back to Mirror Lake, exhausted with a pounding headache.
Climbed the route again with Steve Beck and Marty in the summer of 1987 (I think). Used an early beta max camera to make a movie of the climb which you can see on my Youtube page.
Our group was successful in our day hike of mt. whitney using the main mt whitney trail. Weather was perfect other than a lot of smoke from nearby fires when you reached the summit. Wish I would have not been lazy and trained a little bit more. Still worth the trip as weather caused us not to summit a couple times before.
It was a perfect day and we knew we had to start no later than 1am to have a chance to get to the top and back from the trailhead at Whitney Portal.
After a cozy evening in Lone Pine, we were weighing our backpacks at the trailhead by 12:50am. There was no sign of rain even though the lightning was "dancing" quite far away from us but still pretty spectacular. At 27lbs, I had the heaviest one-day pack.
I had driven in from San Francisco the day before, so 8+ hrs in a car, no sleep, no real acclimatization. I was wondering what's ahead of me at 10K+ high. We were making our way for 5 hrs through dark night, walking half asleep. I was grateful I knew the trail well and was leading the way after the Outpost Camp where it does get tricky. Download the Mt.Whitney app, was my best friend in doubt.
My master plan to meet the sunrise while on switchbacks came true. So did my fear of dizziness and tiredness. We were now at 11K+ high and I needed a few extra breaks to deal with my what's seemed to AMS at that point. My body was "WTH" is this given that I don't even belong to a gym.
Arriving at Trail Crest gave me strength and the motivation to keep pushing. We were still making the time. I dropped my backpack (stupidly leaving my warmer gloves there as well) and we pushed to the summit, one step at a time. Until we finally stood on top of Mt.Whitney. We were happy and cheery, but we also knew we are only halfway done.
After 30+ min on the top, we started our journey down. I was the weakest going up and felt pretty strong going down. We made it to the car by 5pm.
I had 4 liters of water with me and it was enough for the whole day. Even though there is plenty of water on a way, just make sure to grab a filter or some fast acting purifying tablets.
I can't wait to return and see yet another angle of this magnificent mountain.

This was by far the easiest, most enjoyable climb I've done all year. California knows how to have nice trails.
Whitney has long been goal of mine. Started from portal at 12:30 a.m. because couldn't sleep. Beautiful and calm hike under bright moon. Front had brought snow and ice beyond Trail Camp. Made it to top shortly after sunrise. Roundtrip in just under 12 hours. Loved it.
Second time on the summit for sunrise, but this time there was quite the glissade on the way down!
