This compact, lightweight unit filters up to 200 gallons of water without clogging. The filter physically removes particles, protozoa, and bacteria down to 0.3 microns in size, including giardia, salmonella, cryptosporidium and others. A glass-fiber element is pleated for increased surface area to handle silt and muddy water. Activated carbon core adsorbs chemicals and pesticides to improve taste of water. Pre-filter at hose inlet filters to 150 microns, removing larger contaminants before they reach the main filter to increase its life span.

I have only ever had this filter as I have never felt the need to replace it. Mine filterd at least 200 gallons of water before I needed to replace it as I have payed attention to not filtering muddy waters. (In fact it finally died when I did filter in a very shallow stream where it may have ingested some mud.) The hoses are easy to put on and take off.

Not everything about this filter is five stars however. The pump while not hard to use would benifit from a lever set up to make pumping easier. The inlet could be weighted a bit more so that it sinks more easily, it has a tendency to float out of the area you want to filter from. Also while the hoses are sufficient in length longer hoses would allow you to stand while filtering.

I have had the same filter for over 6 or 7 years so it is very durable.

I have had this filter for about 3 years now and have finely just replaced the cartridge. I have no idea how many gallons it had filtered but it is alot. I have taken it as the sole filter on probably a dozen 4 person trips and half dozen 12 person many day trips. That equates to much water. It finally gave up on a trip to Zion in some silty rain run off. Should have known better. The new cartridge I put in came with an additional screen around the filter to add to longevity of life. But honestly I have grown tired of hauling it around as it does way much more than iodine pills. It will only go on the large person trips with low miles in the future.

Pumps easily until cartridge is ready to be replaced. Have not had any problems with the filter. Has attachments for Nalgene bottle and hydration bladder. A very nice filter.

This filter is light, compact and easy to use. It pumps well until the filter is real dirty. The filters will clog up fast if you filter glacial melt. Getting water from streams is real easy and the water tastes good. I've even filtered the water in small pools at Trail Camp on Mt Whitney which are supposed to be very contaminated because they are so close to the toilets. The filter replacements are pricey and will add up. I wonder sometimes if a ceramic filter is better from this standpoint?

I have been using mine for about 4 years and have had a great experience. I typically fix a coffee filter or bandana over the intake with a rubber band to prefilter any sand or gunk that would jam the filter. This has greatly extended the life of the filter. I also try to filter from moving water with minimal plant growth.

I have been taking iodine tablets along in the event my Pur Hiker breaks but have yet to need them.

The only negative point I have noticed is the hoses frequently get in the way or make the pumping process awkward. I usually solve this by having someone help in the process if possible.

I love it
It works extremely well every time. Alot of people say it's heavy and big but I dont really see that. For what it does it seems light and small to me.

And I hate Iodine!

It's never let me down
Been using mine for about 8 years and I have no complaints. Every time I use it, it works! Wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Used mine for 3 years and it never let me down. Water came quick, around 1 liter a minute. Staretd to lose some flow over time, even wiht cleaning. The pump stroke could be a little more efficient but it isn't that bad. Easily cleaned in the field and pretty durable. A good general filter overall.

Essential gear
I have the Katadyn Hiker Pro. Operation is simple, and although the hoses seem to be somewhat of a hassle, it is an acceptable trade-off in return for fresh tasting and safe drinking water.

Great Filter
I've had one of these for about 7 years and it has never failed me. I have never gotten sick and it is very fast and reliable. It really puts out a lot of water everytime you pump. I sure prefer this over iodine because I can keep the natural taste of the water without worrying that I'm gonna get sick. I would highly recommend it!

Back Up
I have used the Pur Hiker on and off for many years. Normally, I rely just on iodine tablets to treat water, but on outings with family members I bring the filter. In my experience, filtering water with family members by a beautiful creek or small waterfall is great quality time.

This system is somewhat of a pain with the hoses and all. Sometimes, I've had difficulty getting the intake hose onto the filter securely. And of course there is the weight and space factor when you're trying to make your pack as light as possible.

Remember to keep track of when you need to change the carbon filter.

Great Filter
This filter works great, and it is realativly inexpensive. I highly recomend this filter. I have pumped hundreds of gallons through it everywhere from deserts to high mountains and have yet to get sick. Oh and it pumps fast!

Still going strong
after occasional use over many years. This filter holds up well in warm weather and does well when used according to directions. I did find that young kids pumping too hard and too fast can cause it to sputter and fail but that's to be expected. I have always taken very good care of this pump by drying it out carefully after each trip, using coffee filters in bad water and I expect it to last a few more trips or until the rubber parts disintegrate. I'm giving it a 4 only because I know it wouldn't hold up to the acidic water we had in Maine where we had to wash our ceramic filter every day. You can't do anything like that with this pump.
