3 season boots for Alps and NZ

by beean » Sun May 19, 2013 9:15 am

Hi All,

I'm chasing some advice about boots;

I'm after a 3 season pair for mountaineering in the Alps and NZ. Has any one got any recommendations? How do they climb? How warm are they (temps)? How do they handle the approaches?

Right now something like the Scarpa Jorasses or Sportiva Nepal seems to fit the bill..

Its so subjective beean. I think the LS Nepals are almost definitely warm enough unless you have a severe case of the cold feet. I would prefer the lighter and less easier to roll of the tongue Trango Extreme Evo Light GTX.

I am kind of affiliated with them but Mainpeak have the k5. They are an older model but a good price for a beginner.

You would have to make sure you have crampons with the new-matic binding and not the metal bail of the cramp-omatic for these boots. The Nepal Evo on the other hand can take both.

Cheers for the advice.

I'll most likely be buying the boots and crampons in Europe. I've heard that Sportiva's run pretty narrow, do you know if that's true?

Trango Extreme Evo Light GTX looks like it could be a winner, I assume a super long name means it's a super good boot? :lol:

Ah mate, if thats the case, just try them on. I can get a pair out of LS out of the box and they fit my normal feet fine. You will have so much choice in the shops in the Alps region. Salewa have some nice models and of course Scarpa are everywhere.

Try Garmonts beean: http://www.garmontusa.com/garmont/outdo ... ntain.html

Anyway I'd consider buying plastic boots if you are going to attempt the snowy Alps 4000ers...

Wouldn't plastics be overkill for summer routes?

Am I right in thinking that having a boot that's too warm could be just as bad as one that isn't warm enough?
