it would be overkill for hood and shasta, and not warm enough for denali. get a pair of plastics.

Edit: u can always add an overboot if you are going early season or really worried about them being warm enough

Kiwi, strong opnion. Do you own them ? A friend just summited Vinson with three climbers wearing Spantiks. Last time I checked, Vinson can rival Denali on the temp side.

sorry, I'm just repeating what I've heard on other forum posts asking the same question. I do not own a pair for 2 reasons: I don't have $600 and, most importantly, they don't make them in a size 14-15 (euro 48-50?) but I do have a pair of plastics, and if I ever make it to alaska I'll buy new liners and save myself $450.
disregard my last post, except for the plastics part, which I do have firsthand experience with.

Yes I know, I have read all the other posts, sorry for repeating this boresome conversation. I just bought my wife some Spantiks, but before I blow more money, I was wondering my best options for a boot that will do it all (so I don't have to buy multiple pairs)...

One boot to do Hood/Shasta/Denali?

I climbed Shasta in my tele boots, Denali (no summit) in La Sportiva Nuptses, and Hood in everything from plastics to running shoes (really!).

If I had to pick one pair for all three, it would be Nuptses, Spantiks, or something similar to prevent losing toes on Denali. Then slugging away up Hood and Shasta in heavy boots that are overkill in most conditions.

I just picked up a pair of spantiks for Denali this summer. I talked to numerous people at Neptunes (who had climbed denali) who said the spantiks W/O overboots would be pleny warm. I also heard about a person that worked there who summited vinson with spantiks and no overboots. btw remember you arent confined to leaving early on denali to get to camp by nightfall. You can wait till its warmer before heading up.

Watch ebay for them. I picked up a pair for $270. I guess that made my decision a bit easier as well as to what boots to buy.

Funny comment, in the recent RMI mass email they interviewed Ed and Conrad about boots. Both said to NOT try and do it all with one or two pairs but to have several. I guess that is a bit easier when you are sponsored and likely have not paid for gear for a decade or more!
