BCA Tracker 2 - pros and cons?

by tfarkas » Sun Jan 09, 2011 10:27 pm

Hi all,

I'm looking into purchasing my first avalanche beacon, and it turns out I can get a new Tracker 2 for about $100 off. I'm trying to get a bead on the pros and cons of this model.

Thoughts?

pro/con vs another transceiver model? GPS? cell phone?

pro: it could save you life
con: it might not

in all seriousness, it looks sweet - a good improvement over the dead-simple Tracker DTS, which I use.
would probably look seriously at this one in a year or two when I replace my DTS.

Tracker 2 is a lot like Tracker 1. Great simple beacon for people who dont practice all the time. For those who want something a little more feature rich at a slight cost of simplicity, the Ortovox 3+ is a solid option. Lots of reviews at Wildsnow.com.

Bottom line, have you taken an AIARE Level I course yet? If not, spend the money on the course before you spend the money on the beacon. A fringe benefit will be that you'll use a bunch of different beacons. Then you can go buy the one you like.
