Buffalo stuff in the US (shelled pile)

by climberslacker » Thu Jan 28, 2010 5:13 am

Does anyone know were to buy buffalo stuff in the US? Also, I read on Andy Kilpatrics site, that the shelled pile is a good jacket, and was wondering if the Marmot Driclime windshirt is shelled pile or not, as it looks like it might be.

Thanks!

shelled micro pile

The marmot driclime is indeed shelled micropile (powerdry I believe). I prefer the Rab Vapour Rise line of shelled micro-pile apparel. They use Pertex Equilibrium as the outer fabric, which is a perfect choice for that style of jacket.

Actually the pile used in Buffalo is not the same as other garments, it is actually pile, rather than fleece, which most use. Pile was used more in the 1979s/80s. The Marmot uses fleece. The closest you´ll get in the USA to Buffalo is the Montane Extreme Smock, stocked by some retailers. They are similar, with a slight difference in materials and cut. Both are too hot for anything in summer.

micro pile

My buddy has the extreme smock, its a great winter climbing piece. I had an old driclime and it was indeed micropile; maybe they're not now, but they were. If the Rab Vapour Rise isn't micro pile, then what is it?
