CA Mountaineering Organizations

by DukeJH » Thu Oct 21, 2010 8:53 pm

I recently moved to Huntington Beach for work and am looking for easy ways to meet folks to climb with and get into the climbing community. I've done plenty of solo trips and will likely continue but comeraderie can be enjoyable too. My focus is toward mountaineering to prepare for peaks such as Aconcagua and Denali but I'll rock climb, backpack, etc. to keep sharp.

I've looked into the California Mountaineering Club, Sierra Club, Southern California Mountaineers Association. Others?

Nothing against the Plans and Partners on Summitpost, the thought is great, but most of the posts are somewhat old.

Suggestions?

My 1st advice is to not take any advice from 1000Pks.

I'm a member of the CMC and know a lot of people in the SC & SCMA. You just missed the CMC's meeting yesterday in Fullerton. Look up the SPS Section of the Sierra Club. They do more mountaineering related outings than the regular Sierra Club. CMC and SCMA has a lot of sites booked out in Joshua Tree, Red Rocks, among other places. Winter is coming to the local mountains and the Sierra and none of those clubs do too many winter mountaineering trips. The SPS folks are switching to the DPS as winter rolls around.

I'm in Laguna Hills, 20 minutes south of you. I used to be into winter trips but there's enough suffering in this world and I don't need to contribute to it. I can still be suckered into mountaineering trips this winter. Look me up.

There are a lot of people on this board from Socal that are very active. Also look into Meetup.com. Use caution with Meetup as there's less structure.

Welcome to the OC and do not fear the Orange Curtain.

Ditto what Kevin said about CMC (in fact, last night one of our members did a presentation on her recent climb of Aconcagua). Most of the leadership positions (that is officers) are filled by older folks (like me; but we always welcome younger folks), but the general membership has plenty of people younger than 40. Right now, CMC has monthly climbing trips at JT (Sat.Sun.). There will be some winter mountaineering outings on the schedule (last the Mountaineer's Route was done) including San Gorgonio (ski descent). You can see the schedule here http://californiamountaineer.net/ and outings are always being added. Application form will also be on the website.

Meetup Groups dude! There's thousands of them. I actually belong to 4 of them for rock climbing to backcountry skiing.

Just curious..

Hey DukeJH -

I'm kinda a solo guy, too, and based out of NorCal, but I've met some good partners via most of the groups below. While some of their activities are local, it's not where you're from, but where you're at when you meet up in the hills:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CMG/ (A less-formal offshoot of the CMC)
http://www.rock-rendezvous.org/ (Bay area, but they reserve a lot of sites and folks come from all over)
http://www.geocities.com/danielzimmerli ... lcome.html (Cragmont Climbing Club)
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CragmontClimbingClub/ (their Yahoo group)
http://www.mudncrud.com/forums/ (Pinnacles NM)
http://cascadeclimbers.com/forum/ubbthr ... p/ubb/cfrm (Up north, eh?)
http://www.whitneyportalstore.com/ (Mostly about a mule trail, but some of them get around)
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/search/act?query=climbing (No joke, adjust for your area)
and last but not least
http://www.supertopo.com/climbing/forum.php (the taco!)

There's a batch of similar sites for stuff down your way, like these guys:
http://sangabrielmnts.myfreeforum.org/
I know I've seen more.

There's a little SoCal here:
http://www.mountainproject.com/

A lot of the usual suspects frequent all the above and they can give you more places to go.

Also check your local climbing gyms, you never know.

leave your subjective analysis in your ass or a toilet, because that's where it belongs since it's nothing but shit

go find yourself a nice casino buffet and overindulge

personally, i have been introduced to many fine outdoor enthusiasts via CMC...really glad you aren't a member Pete

40 years of climbing, that's longer than I have been alive. I'm sure there's a lot for me to learn from you. I want a ticket to heaven. When are we climbing, Pete? Serious inquiry.
