Cross Country Ski/Snow opportunities in WV.

by EastcoastMike » Mon Nov 02, 2009 10:10 pm

New to the DC area and looking for a place to get away to x-country ski and or snowshoe. I am thinking WV may be the best bet. Does anyone have ideas about possible places and or best months climate-wise for snow. Thanks!

I would think maybe Dolly Sods Wilderness, but have no personal experience to back that up.

Get yourself to Whitegrass ASAP! 3.5 hour drive from DC. Awesome people, quiet mountain, and plenty of snow by east coast standards. They do a great job keeping the snow report updated throughout the season, too.

If you want a really good time go to the Ullr party...umm, shotski?! Maybe I've said too much already...

Dolly Sods is a good choice, but find out the snow conditions before you go. It's consistently high elevation (for the East Coast) and gets a lot of precipitation. I've been their twice in March in different years. One year had several feet of snow and great winter conditions. The next year was burned off and mostly bare ground.

Whitegrass is my favorite place. Yummy food. AWESOME atmosphere. Great people. Can't wait to go back. Hard and easy trails. Live webcam with honest weather and trail conditions.

Peter Larkins wrote:I also must recommend Whitegrass. I went once last year during the late November snow storms. Very cool place. If I can find my own gear, I'd like to circumvent the Sods at some point. The high elevations of WV average around 180" of snow, which isn't too bad for the Mid-Atlantic.

Hope you guys were able to get out to Canaan this past weekend. Snow and friends at Whitegrass were both phenomenal as usual! Yay for winter!

We had a really great time at Whitegrass including a shotski last night. What a great place.
