The Zoroastrians have a similar practice with their Towers of Silence, although a wilderness setting is appealing.

You beat me to it! There is a great John Irving book("A Son of the Circus") with this practice as a central theme.

that is absolutely ridiculous. I don't know what else to say. The person next to me who I just told the headline to just said, "that's crazy" after considering it for a few moments. This is straight out of a bad movie.
