Hyalite Canyon road is closed until May 16th. Biking up the road is fun, but you can't drive. The Gallatins are still stacked with a few feet of snow. You could find a few early season hikes like Black Canyon of the Yellowstone in the park, or maybe Storm Castle in the Gallatins.

Do either of you know anything about the south cottonwood creek approach? looks like that couls be a potential option. ski mountaineering was the plan anyway, but without the hyalite road, that way is to far. if the south cottonwood road is open to the TH, its approx. 8 miles in. It'd eat up more time to access but probably still get the objective. The forest service isn't much help. They must not have a live staff right now and the recorded info is very old. Thanks for any info you have.

south cottonwood road to the trailhead is always open. Probably the first few miles are melted out and then a couple feet of snow. if you have skis, you could avoid lots of postholing. It's far though. Blackmore is a full day from Hyalite Canyon, probably and overnight trip at least this time of year from S Cottonwood.
