Hands down, The Tobasco Donkeys. Former rangers at Philmont Scout Ranch, their songs include:

Fire on the Mountain

Foggy Mountain

Friend of the Devil

Lewis and Clarke

Paradise

Theme Time

I Don't Mind (with its adaptation of the Edward Abbey quote: "One final paragraph of advice: do not burn yourselves out. Be as I am - a reluctant enthusiast....a part-time crusader, a half-hearted fanatic. Save the other half of yourselves and your lives for pleasure and adventure. It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it. While you can. While it’s still here. So get out there and hunt and fish and mess around with your friends, ramble out yonder and explore the forests, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air, sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, the lovely, mysterious, and awesome space. Enjoy yourselves, keep your brain in your head and your head firmly attached to the body, the body active and alive, and I promise you this much; I promise you this one sweet victory over our enemies, over those desk-bound men and women with their hearts in a safe deposit box, and their eyes hypnotized by desk calculators. I promise you this; You will outlive the bastards", and my favorite lines from the song: "When that tax man comes looking, I'm at 10,000 feet cooking" and "Although civilization is a nice place to visit, I wouldn't want to live there."

and my all time favorite: Ugly Girl (which is not to be taken as a reflection of the female members of SP!). :-)

Someplace around here, I have a CD by Vern Tejas and another Denali guide. Cover photo is of Vern playing his violin and the other guy with a guitar on top of Denali. Not exactly award winning music, but the lyrics are hysterical!

i think of the Adirondacks when ever i listen to "Colonel Forbin's Accent" by Phish the first few verses are the best....

Colonel Forbin stared up at the mountain
And wiped away the beads of sweat
That glistened on his brow
His tired feet were buried in the quagmire
And his bloodshot eyes saw all that lay between him
And fulfillment of his vow

And he felt his fingers wrap around a knotted root
And pulled his body upwards
To a sea green mossy boulder
And he dragged his weary carcass [or "shit-ass"] up the mountain

And he climbed so slowly
He climbed so slowly
Ahead
Ahead

Suddenly he heard the crack of thunder
And the rocks began to crumble overhead
And tumble down the mountain to the
Dismal swamp that lay beneath the jagged cliffs
through which his path had led
And the earth began to quake beneath his feet
And the mighty mountain changed before his eyes
And he stood amidst a sea of dust and rocks and stones
Cascading down the mountain
And a thousand birds were headed for the sky. Oh...

The sacred creed will be yours
And if you wait until tomorrow
The sacred creed will be yours
To devour
Yours
To seize
And to obey
Obey

When the dust had cleared, the colonel lifted up his head
And was driven to his knees by a blazing beam of light
And he saw the silhouette that stood before him
And he bowed in reverence
Trembling in the shadow of the mighty legend's form
Icculus the prophet stood before his eyes
Looking down on Colonel Forbin
Where he shuddered in the puddles and the muck
And he quietly addressed him

And he spoke so slowly
He spoke so slowly
Ahead
He said

Colonel Forbin I know why you've come here
And I'll help you with your quest to gain the knowledge that you lack
I call upon my faithful friend the mockingbird
To fly and seize the helping book and bring it to your shack
And a tree of knowledge in your soul will grow
And the Helping Friendly Book will plant the seed
But I warn you that all knowledge seeming innocent and pure
Becomes a deadly weapon in the hands of avarice
And greed

The sacred greed will be yours
And if you wait until tomorrow
The sacred creed will be yours
To devour
Yours
To seize
And to obey
And to obey

on a personal note i have been called colonel forbin by friends for my slow pace while hiking up hill

Revisited by O.A.R. (...of a revolution)

Peter sat on a mountaintop, nothern wind blows through his hair all day long.
Peter never took no time for him to stop.
Just stood right there and he stared.
Singing, oh.

He don't need us anymore, cause life is just too good.
He'll be living everyday and loving like we could.
And that's Peter's song.

Have you ever known a boy, lonely as can be?
A lifetime away he was a child of the free.
So here he stand alone crying at the sea.
It listens, and moves, and holds him.
Singing, oh.

He don't need us anymore, cause life is just too good.
He'll be living everyday, and loving like we could.
And that's Peter's song.

Late one day on the mountaintop Peter swept down the side.
He'd been waiting all his life for one more chance to ride.
But the Sun said, "Son, don't you come around up here anymore."
So Peter topped on his hat and head to the west shore.
Singing Ladanday.
And he's singing it all night long.
Singing Ladanday.
And he's singing it all night long.
And that's Peters song.

Have you ever known a boy lonely as can be?
Lifetimes away we were children of the sea.
And if the Sun and Moon come through
Freedom is a guide.
Hoping that one day we will all try.
Singing Ladanday.
And I'm singing it all night long.
Singing Ladanday.
And I'm singing it all night long.
And that's Peters song.

"Whose Chariot?"also by O.A.R.

A patterned sunrise swept along away the sunrise.
And over these underpasses a towering mountain does rise.
But don't cross the river, not over there.
There will be a mystery revealed and I bet you dare.
And if I am to seek this place y'all can see
Whose Chariot to follow so I can be free?

At night the stars cry.
I gaze upon a lake of backyard.
And under these overpasses a towering mountain does lie.
But don't cross the river, not over there.
There will be a mystery revealed that we're meant to share.
So if I am to seek this place y'all can see
Whose Chariot to follow so I can be free?

Oh no, here we are again.
Oh no, here we are again.

My mamma told me,
"Don't go cross that river."
"Because you might not make it back.
The beast gonna eat your heart."
She said, "Don't go out there.
And stay upon your track."
"This money has torn my family apart and I cannot buy it back."
So of course I built my boat, and I was half upon my way.
And when I got to the other side the water came rushing down.
Washed me away.

Whose Chariot...
Freedom...

Whose Chariot?
Take me home.
Take me home.

Oh no, said I'm out that door again.
I left my house, my money, and my dearest friend.
I'm not going back, Jack, across the river.
Got a little bit of business that I'm doing today.
You didn't fell me, you can't really see no good.
I made my life out of a stack of wood.
I've been moving cross the river today.
But whose chariot take me home?

Whose Chariot?
Take me home.
Hallelujah.
I'm coming home.
Who Chariot gotta will you take me?
Who Chariot will you will you take me?
Who Chariot will you will you take me?
Who Chariot would you pick me up and take me?
Who Chariot gotta will you take me?
Who Chariot just pick me up and take me.
Who Chariot come and get me.
Whose Chariot take me home?
Take me home.

Some of Mozart's so-called Masonic music (vocal) has a haunting quality that fits well when the skies are dark over the Sierra Nevada.
