Some NZ mountaineering pics - Jan-Feb '09

Just some pics of 2 weeks spent in NZ.

1st week based at Kelman Hut and when weather allowed played on Hoschetter Dome and Mt Alymer

2nd week based at Pioneer Hut. Attempted Mt Tasman. We turned around due to lack of efficiency on what was for me extremely icy slopes. Lesson learnt, more time needed crampon-ing on >45 deg ice.

Possible missing US person on Aconcagua

A friend recieved a distressed satellite call from Aconcagua from Jennifer (JJ) Fielding on Monday Feb 2nd. I know that she was with a single guide but I do not know what route she is on. When she called she was at 18,000 ft and had become separated from her guide and a storm was moving in. The batteries on her satellite phone were possibly dying. Does anyone have any information?

Wij zijn met 2 en er kunnen tot 12 mensen op 1 permit. Heb je zin om ons te vergezellen of wil je gewoon een permit ...

Two die on Snowdon

We are getting a real winter in the UK this year, (2008/9).

Sadly it is claiming lives. Two more yesterday. On Snowdon.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/north_west/7864422.stm

It's well worth watching the Interview with the mountain rescue guy. Balanced and sensible comments from him.

The mention of an avalanche risk is interesting. I wasn't aware snow depths could get to that level in Wales. I'm back there next week and will take great care where I walk: although Snowdon ...

Glacier courses in the Alps

Most courses cover everything. That's probably also why they are so expensive. I think it's about time I did something, even if it was to make sure that what I'm doing is relatively safe.

But, I don't want to spend ten days doing exercises. I just want to be walking and having fun. I found a course which covers:
    *Knots
    *snow
    *ice
    *rock
    *orientation
    *preparation
    *evacuation
    *walking safely on a gletsjer
    *securing on short ...

ShiSha Pangma

What I've heard from people who've been there is that Shisha Pangma is a lot tougher than people give it credit for, and that the "easiest" 8000er is Cho Oyu.
