Because the point drop happened before the change was made.

Yikes!

REI just sent me a bill because my points discount was retroactive.

I only post for the money (points ;-) )

My points dropped 1 point, then 2 more, no biggie for me either.

The number of my mountains, routes, photos, trip reports and lists seemed to have remain unchanged.

My number of signed logs has dropped; I am guessing about 5 entries?

Not sure if helps to figure out the problem.

Thanks y'all.

Seems to be the case for most. Thus far it appears that no submissions, other than some summit logs have been effected.

If anyone lost some summitlogs, you can use the wayback machine to see which ones and re-sign them.

I noticed that my points dropped 6 points last night, but it seems that the number of my areas, mountains, routes, articles and photos is unchanged, and also my summits' logs.
Thanks.

I don't understand what the advantage is of having more points. What is the point of points?

Whoever hits 1,000,000 points first gets a $25 gift certificate at REI.

Actually, the only advantage to having more is vote weight. Someone who has more vote weight has a vote counted as more valid. Unfortunately this part is actually necessary as in the past before vote weight people were creating multiple avatars to down vote or vote objects.

Voting is supposed to be a way to separate the good stuff from the garbage, if used properly. Unfortunately, people vote up a lot of garbage, so it doesn't always work as intended.

Other than that though, points are supposed to be nothing more than to gauge how active a member is.

Occasionally they are used to troubleshoot SP, even though that wasn't the original intention. Although SP is a good website, there are the occasional, but rare hiccups. For example, the recent big drop indicated a technical problem and some summit logs were lost. It likely would have gone unnoticed if not for the point changes (which are probably related, but we aren't sure how). If anyone does notice a widespread significant change, please notify the staff or elves, preferably in the forum as to inform other users.

One thing that did cause point to change is that gear reviews are now worth 0.25 instead of 2. If you had gear reviews (gear pages remain the same), then you should have had a point adjustment.

As for the big drop that most people experienced, we don't know what happened, but do know that several summit logs and probably votes disappeared. Thus far, no one has reporting anything else as missing.

Why do you keep making the gear reveiws worth more??

0.01 was just fine heck I think they should be worthless.

WHY??

Matt (the other Matt) wanted them to be worth the same as comments. I don't think it is a big deal either way and it shouldn't matter much.

They make excellent seduction lines in bars. Girls go just crazy over them.
