Avalanche Level 2 Training

by buckie06 » Wed Oct 25, 2017 2:14 pm

Hello,
I've taken an AIARE Level 1 avalanche course a few years ago and have been thinking of taking the Level 2 course this winter.

Has anyone here taken a Level 2 course? did you think it was worth it? Was it geared more to ski patrol/snow professionals, or appropriate for backcountry enthusiasts like myself?

thanks!

I am an AST (Canadian) instructor, similar to AIARE. Personally, I find the AST1 an introduction and the AST2 an almost mandatory addition. Also since things and curriculums are evolving. So go for it.
AIARE (non-pro) courses are aimed at enthusiasts, not professionals.

I took Level 2 last winter and it gave me a big bump up in my knowledge. There is a lot to be said for living and breathing the material for four full days.

If there was a course between level 2 and level 3, i would take it too.

Half of my class were mountain guides and half recreational types like me.

I took both of my courses from San Juan Mountain Guides and highly recommend their hut based classes. Nothing better than hanging out in a backcountry hut high in the San Juans with ski guides while it is nuking snow!
