Seeking partners. Three Day San Juan Peakbagging Trip

by hgrapid » Sun Mar 24, 2019 8:30 pm

Folks, I live in Scottsdale, AZ and I am planning a hiking/climbing trip up to the San Juan Range for dates between June 29th and July 5th. My preference is to arrive in Durango the afternoon before and meet up. Then we’d do a three day hiking trip. I’ll need someone with 4WD for Day 2 and Day 3 trailheads. I’ll want to do the hikes June 29, June 30, July 1, or June 30-July 2, July 1-July 3, or July 2-July 4, or July 3-July 5.

Day 1 Hike: Molas Pass at Colorado Trail Segment 25 Trailhead at Little Molas Lake. Hit West Turkshead Peak 12,849’, Spencer Peak 13,087’, Grand Turk 13,148’, and Sultan Mountain 13,368’. We’ll do 8 miles and 4,000’+ gain.

Day 2 Hike: Redcloud 14,034’ and Sunshine Peak 4,700’ of gain and 11.5 miles.

Day 3 Hike: Uncompahgre 14,309’, Noncompahgre 13,158’, and Nellie Point 13,106’ – 11.5 miles and 5,000’ of elevation gain – Bob Burd Route: https://listsofjohn.com/PeakStats/gpx.p ... r_id=13168

Happy to go with people in the Phoenix area, from which I am recruiting. Looking for 3-4 people to join. If interested, contact me via PM.

FYI, it is highly unlikely (but not impossible) that the 4wd road to that trailhead will be open that early. Maybe by early July, but waiting until mid-July or later would make it more likely that the road will be open.

There's a lot of snow in the San Juans this year.

I have a Day 3 Alternative Hike whereby if snow conditions are such that Uncompahgre is not reachable, we will remain at Grizzly Gulch Trailhead, and we’ll hike Handies Peak 14,053’ and Whitecross Mountain 13,542’. That is 8.5 miles round trip and about 4,400’ of elevation gain.

I may end up hiking the La Plata Range for Day 2 and Day 3 north of Hesperus due to snow.

Ended up hiking in the La Plata Range for two days July 2 and July 4 and one day at Lizard Head Pass. Tons of snow remain. High 11k to low 12k summits accessible. Plan to go back next summer to hike higher peaks.
