Avalanche conditions on Aconcagua, late Jan/early Feb

by Diggler » Tue Oct 30, 2007 8:46 pm

Specifically the SW face, more specifically the Ibáñez-Marmillod route. I want to save as much weight as possible, so if avalanches really aren't a concern, it'd be nice to leave the beacon, etc. behind. Also, better to take ice screws or pickets for the time-route indicated (or both)? Thanks to all for any beta!

Dirk,

You won't have much in the way of avalanche conditions on Aconcagua during this time. For that route you might even have trouble finding water. Research it and see but every time I've been there and looked up at that route it looked pretty dry to me.

In any event going to Aconcagua during that time of year is like going to the Sierra in mid-August. You should be fine with avalanche conditions.

It's really more of a November/December route. The main danger on it is rockfall, not avalanche, and this gets worse as the summer goes on.

Thanks for the beta, guys. Will bring the helmet & leave the beacon behind.

i've always had my eyes on that route. Let me know how it goes. I definitely think that the route is beautiful.

Have fun!

I agree- route looks quite intruiging. Will do.
