Coyotes are howling on the trail not too far above Palm Springs. The drought is bringing them closer to the city. Here is a article from last year about the problem.

Today in my field exercise with my students we saw 2 cougar kits like these. Luckily from the van and mother was no where to be seen (but surely close by...!)

The "pushups" were part of the lizard's thermoregulation.

I may have been eating some mushrooms at the time....

He was absolutely challenging me! I guess I had invaded his territory. He eventually scrambled away when he was satisfied he had showed me! This guy had brass ones. I could have smashed him with my fist!

Dude, that's a great tail. I mean, tale. Perhaps he was someone you knew from gym class, reincarnated... that might explain the behavior.

Cheers!

I saw a red fox on the Skyline trail last week. Now I read about a jogger attacked by a rabid fox in Arizona http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7712306.stm

We saw some grey foxes on the Condor Peak trail in the San Gabriel mountains. These are found at lower elevations than the desert Red Fox.
