We're planning a self-supported trip to the Huayhuash region in Peru in early Oct. Any transportation recommendations (not interested in guides, porters, etc.)? thanks

Get ahold of Chris Benway at the Cafe Andino. Chris lives in Huaraz and specialises in the Huayhuash and can do or provide whatever you need. Logisitcs, info, transportation ect...As little or as much support as you want.

Go to Huaraz and take a bus. It's as simple as that. You don't need to pay a middle man for anything. It's a two bus deal. The first one leaves early in the morning and connects with the second bus that will put you at the trailhead in the early afternoon. Buy the ticket the night before. I think it costs something like $5. I don't remember the name of the bus company but anyone at a hostal should be able to point you to the station, just a few blocks off main street.

I agree with MichaelJ, you can get all the information from your hotel. The bus leaves early in the morning and if you are lucky you can start hiking that afternoon. Good luck.

I can provide an excellent recommendation for an arriero if you are looking to go that route... but it will not be something you can set up over the internet... as others said, public transportation is no big deal and colectivos can be quite entertaining
