Just returned from the Winds. What a spectacular area. Camped first at Island Lake, then Indian Basin for 3 days. Climbed Fremont on an unbelievably calm, clear day with Craig H. (AT, PCT, and aspiring CDT thruhiker, who proved to be the perfect companion for this terrific scramble.) While I ran into many people while approaching and camping at Island Lake, I saw just 3 people in 3 days at Indian Basin and above.

(As far as Dubois is concerned, my daughter and I spent five days two summers ago in Dubois - not Dubois as the French may say, but DUBOZZE as the very special people of that sweet corner of the world say - while we were hiking, riding ATVs and eating fine home-cooked food. All that I can say is if you want to see the way Jackson Hole must have been 50 years ago and be in the company of fine people and incredible mountains, go to Dubois and you will be very happy!)

Your slideshow gives an excellent idea of what-to-expect when you take that route. Good job.

It's unbelievable, but I stayed in that same cabin a few years ago!!!! ha ha.

I'd like to plan a return trip next year with the family - wife, two teenagers and in-laws. Looking for a reasonably priced ranch/camp that handle a variety of outdoor needs. Either on the Pinedale or Dubois side of the Winds. Any suggestions?

My daughter and I rented our ATVs from Mackenzie Highland Ranch http://www.mackenziehighlandranch.com/index.html and it will be the place that I stay when I return to the Winds with my family. I forget the name of the owners but they were wonderful, kept the ATVs in tip-top condition, had a very nice stable of horses and knew the area like the back of their hands!

I'm a big fan of the Bridger Wilderness Outfitters in the Upper Green River Valley. They do pack trips, have an awesome guest ranch, and the whole dude bit if you're looking for it.
