climbing in plastic liners?

by rmick25 » Tue Oct 20, 2009 5:55 am

Anyone ever climbed with the liners of your plastic boots for a short technical section.

I'm climbing Mt. Jefferson in Oregon in a couple of weeks. There is some short climbing sections along with glaciers and snow. I'm wearing plastics for the first time. If I didn't feel comfortable climbing in the boots are liners doable?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I could see how one might think that, without having used them before. But no, you'd be better off barefoot.

Take a light pair of approach shoes.

Kofalch used to make a liner specifically made for rock climbing. I can't remember what it was called though.

Ask Steve House...or just read about his ascent of North Twin (?), one of the chapters in his new book.

If you have to wear doubles it's probably too cold to go barefoot. Depending on the liner it may be possible, but you'll also have to consider the wear on the liner (doubles are expensive, no reason to wear out the liner on a single trip). Why not just climb in the doubles? It's just another element of alpinism. With a little practice it's doable.

Have you practiced climbing in your boots? The techniques you use are different than rock shoes - e.g., stiff boots aren't good at smearing but quite good at edging - but depending on the rock you might find you can climb pretty well in them. You might also want to practice rock climbing with crampons on, especially if the technical sections are short and separated by snow/ice sections where you'd want to have crampons.

Thanks everyone! Sounds like Jefferson is no more than class 4 and low class 5 anyway. Shouldn't be a big deal in the boots themselves.
