Malamute Peak using Cathedral Lake approach?

by MarkDidier » Thu Feb 18, 2010 2:23 am

Curious if anyone has climbed Malamute Peak approaching from Cathedral Lake as opposed to Montezuma Basin (summer season)?

The only info I have found is from a TR on 13ers.com - which was part of a descent of Malamute after a summit of Cathedral Peak. To summit, apparently ascend around the cliff bands above the lake (Class 3) - there is a lot of scree and other loose rock above 12,700 feet - attain the saddle and nice Class 2 up the Northwest ridge to the summit.

If anyone has gone up this way, I'd be curious to hear your thoughts about the route (and how is the ridgeline up to UN 13,848 if you happened to do that as well?).

The view from above Cathedral Lake looking towards Malamute and Castle is stunning to say the least. I have a great shot of it (image id 543346) but can't seem to get it to load correctly in this window!!!
