This is her third Olympics and she took time off to have a daughter in 2007...I really did not think she could come back to medal form, yet won the bronze at the World Cup in Canmore this year prior to Vancouver...unreal

then on the other end of the spectrum, Marianne St-Gelais just silvered in the short tract at 20!

Yep Dow, I could watch that 500 m final, the Chinese seemed invincible

Lake Placid and Hockey! Lake Placid was the only place where little kids would get in fights worthy of the pro teams!

Vonn has felt in the combined slalom :( But I have no doubts that she will win any other race in Vancouver

There's no such thing as amateurs anymore, even the college players. When I watch the Olympics I want to see the best. Good for them if they're getting paid for what they do. If ice climbing were an olympic sport would you want to ban Will Gadd from competing since he's got sponsorships?

Yes.

In other words, it ALL boils down to the almighty dollar.

In order to beat somebody, you have to be more than a BAD-ASS. You have to have a sponsor.

Excuse me, but my people would like to talk to your people ...

Good job to the US girls Vonn and Mancusco, who thought US would take gold and silver in this event???

Considering that skiing is WAY MORE POPULAR AND FOLLOWED (like football or baseball here) over in europe, I think thats great that USA got some medals.

Dingus Milktoast wrote:Yes Pro Cheatball Players did for the summer games what hockey crybabies did for the winter...

I recall the amazement when the amateur 1980 team surprised and shocked the world by defeating defacto pro players from the Soviet Union. It was one of the greatest moments in Olympic history and that event is tarnished by every pro hockey player who ever stole a stick rightfully belonging to an amateur.

You wanna throw down on me for that boys, I am ready to defend. But really, just yankin yer hockey chains for the most part!

ha. no need to throw down here...I'm actually from California, and resonate with your points! But I certainly have met TONS of Canadians for whom hockey (and the experience of playing/watching hockey) seems to be part of the national identity.

I actually didn't read the whole thread because it is so f&$%ing long but I love the olympics, I'm glad it is here in Beautiful BC and so what if there are figure skaters, there are curlers for crying out loud. What the heck is that???
But I digress. If you could ski or luge or skate or whatever they are doing then hey, you would probably be an incredible mountaineer too. (except curling). All countries are doing awesome, these people have devoted their lives to their sports, kind of like us eh?
