What is a good pair of pants?

by dakotaconcrete » Fri Apr 23, 2010 5:55 am

I'm fed up with buying a pair of outdoor pants that are torn on the backside within five months of the purchase.

With that said, I'm now more willing to spend more money than what I have been and I'm curious what I could get fitting the following criteria;

-preferably not over $100
-spring, summer, and fall use
-hiking, backpacking,...class 3 or 4 alpine fun that includes bushwacks and glissades!

I basically want something that will hold up long enough to make me feel like I got my money's worth. Any suggestions?

TNF Meridian great pant lite cheep super fast dry rate and durale i love em but i dont know how well thay would hold up in a good bushwacking day. great for alpine use.
if you get them i reccomend the full pant and not the convertable ones thay suck.

and another great pair even thougher is the Patagonia Simple Guide Pants should be less than 100.
cheers.

I have a pair of the REI Acme pants and I like them, but the fabric has suffered rips in a couple spots from glissading (I think).

The best pair of pants I have ever owned were Patagonia Talus pants. They were perfect lightweight, three season pants. I used them year around for alpine climbing, cragging, aid climbing, back country skiing, ice climbing, etc. After 40 seasons of hard use they finally suffered a tear in the knee while bush whacking. Here is the closest thing to it that Patagonia current sells: http://www.patagonia.com/web/us/product ... 3183-0-155. Hey! Only $99.00!

Get a brand with a lifetime guarantee like Outdoor Research. If your pants tear they will replace them for free. They even replaced the down jacket that my dog chewed up, although I wouldn't expect that to fall under regular use.
