Cordillera Blanca in mid May?

by Woodie Hopper » Fri May 28, 2010 3:52 pm

Is this a reasonable timeframe for this area? I'm interested in the Ishinca valley with Tocllaraju and Ranrapalca for goals.

If not, I'll probably head back to Bolivia next year.

Thanks.

1/ Do you mean mid May next year or June this year?

2/ What timeframe? A couple weeks? Will you be acclimatised, or is that going to be part of your timeframe?

Latter half of May 2011. I just got back from Bolivia two weeks ago.

I already have an itinerary planned if I go to the Ishinca valley.

What are your thoughts?

Let me clarify: by "timeframe" I'm referring to weather and conditions for this particular time of year, not time needed for acclimatization.

Not being first hand experienced with May wx in the CB I can only say that I have been looking at the wx on the internet the last week, and it has been pretty unsettled.

However it is obviously going to be seasonally dependent, but most punters will say that it should be settling down to clear consistent weather. Some good mtns to climb though!!

Late May is possible, but your chances of having good weather and conditions are less than if you went in late June, July, or August. The N Ridge of Toc and NE Face of Ranrapalca are both reasonable early season (N Facing). I guess it all depends how much you want to gamble.
