Mt. Whitney name question

by Bark Eater » Fri Jul 23, 2010 1:07 pm

Enjoyed a perfect day ascending Whitney via the main trail on Tuesday. On the way back down we scrambled up to the top of the lesser summit just south of Mount Muir (between Mt. Muir and Trail Crest). Found a register in metal bandaid box and signed it. Great view of the switchbacks from here. Does this lesser peak have a name? None is shown on the topo. map. Thanks!

It sounds like you were on Discovery Pinnacle?

Not Discovery Pinnacle, which is south of Trail Crest. There are two formations north of Trail Crest between it and Mount Muir. The top in question is directly adjacent to and below Mount Muir. Thanks.

OK, sounds like "Trail Crest Tower". I'll see if I can find a photo.

I don't think it's named either. I don't know of a named point or Tower south of Muir...of course, all the ones north are named. I know...helpful, right??
