Loose grivel adze on the Alp Wing?

by Pallando » Fri Oct 14, 2011 9:37 am

So I just got my Alp Wing in the mail. I put the pick and adze on, but the adze is really loose. It rattles about with every swing of the tool. Is this maybe a newer adze that doesn't fit on the older Alp Wing? Any ideas?

Grivel's integrated Adze/Pick and sleeve manu design has not changed in the past 15 years.

You may just want to put the adze retainer portion of the Wing's head in a vise and progressively pinch it till it is tight enough that you have to hand pound the adze onto it. It may just have slightly flared apart enough to cause this issue. The prior owner may have utilized the tool without the adze attached causing it to separate. Also, don't be afraid to crank down (and dap a drop or two of "Locktite" on the bolt) on the retaining bolt.

Ten bucks says that should solve the problm.

Yeah, I planned on replacing it with a hammer, so good to know that it would be loose too. I'll tell you how the vise trick goes.

After looking closer, it the hole on the adze is larger than on the head of the tool. I think Chief's advice will help, but there could still be a lot of rattle. Observe:

Could someone check if the hole for the bolt is that same size on their tool?

Yup! Normal configuration/hole diameter. Just needs to be pinched in a vise.

Guarantee that will do it.
