Hello Dan Howitt,

Yet another avatar. I have personally challenged you to a head to head run up any mountain, and you refused. World class ultra marathoner and climber Uli Steidl has challenged you to your face. Why hide behind your computer making spurious accusations towards a well known and respected climber? Next spring or summer I will race you on Hood, Baker, Rainier, or whatever mountain you want. Head to head. The gauntlet has been thrown, care to pick it up?

Not sure, I was chatting with Uli after a local trail race and the topic turned to speed climbing. He call Dan Howitt "a liar" and said he challenged him to his face to a head to head race which he declined. I have challenged Dan Howitt many times to a head to head race and he has also declined.

Seems like this Dan guy has multiple personalities disorder, or something of similar nature. If you research him online you will see that he posts about his "records" from different avatars that actually belong to him. That is quite sad. What is the freaking point? Speed record on Adams?? Booohoooo!! All these records seem kind of silly to me when they are pushed into the media. I think it is more of a personal thing that shouldn't be advertised, kind of like free soloing. (my opinion) If you push yourself you could write a trip report about it or something. But hiring people to time you and trying to contact different web sites etc to get them to talk about you is quite sad.

Dan holds a grudge for a very long time. Think pit bull with Internet access.
Something like ten years ago Dan made claim to a Rainier speed climbing record. Everyone cheered and said, "Good job!" Then Chad Kellogg pointed out some inconsistencies and pretty soon the whole thing fell apart as a big lie. Ever since that time Dan has been trying to prove Chad a fraud. Of course it's ridiculous because Chad has proved over and over that he is quite capable of these records while Dan has only proved himself an ass.

What happened with that? I heard that Dan holds a grudge because Chad proved him to be a fraud somehow. Do you know any details?
And are all these people who 'timed' him real? Or is it all made up? He claims that there were people from Shasta Mountain Guides monitoring his ascent or something...

I wonder what is a true speed record up Shasta.

From the thread I linked above: "There used to be a race to the top of Mt Shasta held every year. I thought the record was around 1hr45min from the start of the normal south side route. This is the only speed climbing I ever ran into in my 30 years plus in the hills."

That is from the Avalanche Gulch basecamp at 10K right? I can't see someone doing it so fast from the parking lot.

I have no idea. That's about 4,100 feet elevation gain per hour, certainly doable by a very fit and acclimatized athlete under ideal conditions I would think.

Yea but you have to be VERY acclimated to that altitude and an AMAZING (like top of the line) athlete (or I am just a sack of crap compared to them). Do not think there is much interest from top of the line alpinists/mountaineers to waste their time running up Shasta.
I think when I checked Elbrus run (which is world famous and attracts some top of the line mountain runners/speed climbers) their best athletes did something like 3000ft per hour tops. And from what I read a lot of them were acclimated from climbing 6-7000M peaks around Kazakhstan/Kirghizstan..I should check it out again.

In that thread you posted it is obvious which member was Howitt
