The social networking features add no load at all to the server. They are all completely hosted by their independent sites (Google, facebook and twitter) and require no resources from the SP server.

In what way? I've not experienced any periods of slowness since the recent changes two weeks ago and I've been on the site quite a lot since then.

Matt why doesn't the thread in Site Feedback on your twitter additions that kamil linked to show up on the front page?

In the way of adding pics, I had some issues this morning but could fix them.

Sorry guys but everyone I know is still complaining about the server speed. I've been dumped so many times during photo uploads I just expect it now. Some of my by buds have given up and are considering other options like moving their content elsewhere. I would can your current ISP and move the service if this were my site. The site performance has been getting worse all year on our end and it has become almost impossible to get anything done. I am a retired IT professional but I won't go off on this board because I like SP too much. I was on the receiving end of messages like this for almost 20 years so I know what it's like to get complaints. Please look into this because some people will just go away and never return when their frustration level reaches a certain point. The preview of this message just took 4 minutes to ccomplete...

Thanks,

You're right about the photo resizing, Matt. I resize all my pics for SP except those few with route details where higher res is important.
With the social networking stuff it's perhaps the slow old computer at my work which can't cope with connecting with SP, FB, T and G at the same time, cos at home it doesn't slow me down. I still hate those features though and if they are here to stay, I would vote at least for making them less in your face, placed more discreetly instead of on top of every page. It's not only my opinion AFAIK.
But anyway thanks for your great work for SP as usual, Matt :)
Cheers,
Kamil

I agree. Matt don't you think having these features at the top of every mountain, route, and photo page might be excessive? Couldn't you meet the desired objective by placing it someplace appropriate on the home page but not everywhere else?

If it must be on the other pages, perhaps it could be moved to the column on the left on the main object pages, down where the ads are.

Log in time has varied for me. Earlier today it took 4-5 minutes to log in. This evening it took less than 5 seconds. It seems pretty random.

That happens all the time for me. Not the having to do it repeatedly immediately, but SP is always 50% logging me off mid-session and I have to log out and log in again.

I log in to stay logged in, and as a browse around at random times I will stop seeing off-route, reply options in forums, and get messages to stop cheating when trying to vote on a page. Logging out and back in corrects it, but only temporarily and it starts all over again.

Others see this? What is the cause Matt? This has been going on for over a couple months now, you may not have noticed if you haven't been online browsing around for more than 15 minutes at a time.

Yesterday I was editing a pic caption. It took so much time that I had to leave it. The server speed is very slow at AM hours in Spain

Diego is right. Little edits (like fixing a typo in picture caption) can be just as slow or slower than uploading a 4MB picture--the kind of slow where you go off, make a cup of coffee, load the dishwasher, come back, and it's still not done. But this is not consistent--sometimes text edits are pretty much instantaneous, the way they used to be. I don't have any theories about the explanation--I'm just reporting it.

The same thing happened to me (mid-morning), but it only took me 5 seconds to log in the second time. Seems to be faster in the evening ..

Yesterday evening, I uploaded three photos in succession. The first two took about five minutes each. The third took less than a minute. I've noticed similar inconsistencies on other days recently. I've also noticed a lot of double images posted lately. Like chugach mtn boy, I have no theories and am just reporting.

As far as site speed with everything else goes, the only issues I've had in recent days have been due to the connection. But when the connection is weak, it seems that SP is slower to load than other sites and more likely to not load at all, for whatever reason.

I have not been able to upload pictures or anything to SP for a while because it takes so long. I just tried uploading a single picture and left it for about 3 hours. It was still loading when I came back so I just gave up on it! It has been this way for a while and has made it so I can't contribute to the site any more. I'd like to be able to upload without it taking most of the day to do. Is this because of the server speed? I don't have problems on other sites.
