[RECOMMENDATIONS] Hike in late May in Europe

by sm176811 » Mon Feb 17, 2014 1:05 am

Hi

We will be visiting Europe in late May (early June) and wanted suggestion for multi-day hikes. Last year (in Aug/Sept) we did the Haute Route (Chamonix to Zermatt) and loved it and was interested in doing something of same level of difficulty this year. Unfortunately, we have to travel early this season and were concerned of late season snow on the trails.

Our main objectives are (1) Access to good mountain landscape, (2) good exercise, (3) Photography

Any suggestions/tips would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Regards,
John

So after Montblanc Group & Valais why not try Bernese Oberland?

Bärentrek
(perhaps u prefer something in english)

That site also contains lots of other hikes in switzerland.

HTH, Martin

GR20 on Corsica comes to mind. Two years ago, we still had snow on the high mountains, though. But basically it's one of the most famous trecks in Europe. Short listing here:

Also possible: E4 on Crete

Certainly safer weather-wise than anything in the Alps (or Corsica even).

Thanks Martin! Would love to do the trail described in the links

Quick question, are these accessible in the last week of May?

Thanks Gangolf Haub...

Don't know much about Crete or Corsica... Let me read a bit about them.

Anyone done the Kings Way in Sweden? Or anything around Bavaria or Salzburg that we can do in last week of May?

Accessible is a relative term, of course...
Parts of the route (esp. Sefinenfurgge, Hohtürli) will be under snow, but it should be possible for an experienced hiker.
This very much depends on the weather in the weeks before you start, there is no guarantee.
Most of the route should be in summer condition and the two named higher passes can be avoided.
Some of the huts will not be guarded as the season for the alpine huts starts in june, so it is up to you to bring food (a "winter room" is left open) or plan your overnights down in the valley.

The same holds for GR20 IMHO. We've been end of May on the Pietra Piana hut with summer conditions and hut & tentplace was overcrowded. And I've done Punta Minuta same date another year, with crampons & piolet..

On the Pro side in spring season there is far less hassle on these very popular routes. :D
