Read at your own caution if you love to watch sports! At one time in my life I did like watching sports. That was until I discovered my true passion in life, climbing and mountaineering. Doing the 8-5 thing at work I frequently find myself at a loss of words when somone in the office says "hey what about those raiders huh?" I sit there for a minute and then say, "well, I don't really watch many sports these days" or if I'm feeling particularly bold I say "I don't give a #%$! about sports." Then, I see a blank stare from the co-worker as if he doesn't comprehend how I couldn't know the latest on football games. I then return to my first priority at work which is looking at summit porn online. So if anyone can relate to this please feel free to share your workplace stories while we wait for our "weekend warrior time". Cheers!

The answer is: "I was too busy climbing this weekend to catch the game; so what have you climbed lately?"

I find that most people are curious about vigorous outdoors activities like mountaineering, rock climbing, canyoneering, etc. Further, most people I run into in southern California claim to like hiking especially females. So it's no problem to deflect football talk (I do love high school and college football but will not pass up an outdoors activity just to watch a game); someone will always want to hear about my adventurous weekend so long as you don't overdo it with your epic tales.

LOl this is funny because I am the opposite. I hate watching TV and I especially hate watching movies. The ONLY time I ever watch TV is when football is on!

Same here. I love football. I dont have tv service because it's a waste of money and time, but I've always loved the game of football. The strategy behind it is fascinating. That being said, I wouldnt turn down a climb to watch football. I have talked about climbing with people who couldnt care less about it, yet they were courteous....so I extend the same courtesy in return. American Idol for instance.....I'd rather wipe with a porcupine after hemorrhoid surgery than watch, much less talk about, that God forsaken show.....but I humor them anyway.

Introduce your coworkers to climbing by offering to take them climbing. Earlier this fall I took a few nice ladies to the local crag. They've since asked when we can go back and if they can try something more difficult.

I have no problem heading out for a long bike ride (sorry, I don't live close to the mountains) in lieu of watching MOST football games...but I have to admit that if it happens to be a Futbol game I'm really interested in, I'll choose the latter.

The American Idol comment had me in tears. That's the funniest thing I've read online this year. I concur!

I'll put it this way. If you offered me front row Superbowl tickets or a trip to Denali, Matterhorn, Alps, Himalaya, etc. I'd go climbing.

Colleagues will occasionally ask if I am "going to the game?". I respond with "what game?" and they ask "are you serious?", which of course I am, otherwise I would not be asking.

The "I was too busy climbing" response is awesome one. You can say that, then politely ask about a details of the game and after hearing an answer you can express your interest but continue to describe what were you doing. Kind of a diplomatic solution. You are polite, well mannered but also have a chance to show someone you have extraordinary interests and a real passion. Two times a winner
