Revised Opening Date for Reds Meadow Road
The Reds Meadow Road, with access to the Devils Postpile National Monument, is now scheduled to open to the public on Thursday, June 24. The Forest Service and the Park Service are working with the Town of Mammoth Lakes, Mammoth Mountain Ski Area and CALTRANS to get the road open and facilities operational before opening to the public.
Above average snowfall, combined with a cold spring and slow melting, have delayed needed road repairs and access to water and sewer systems. Road repairs are being made to make the road safe for public use, and water and sewer systems must be functional to provide needed visitor amenities.
An above average snowpack may persist in the coming weeks and may limit the ability to open campgrounds and trailheads. Reds Meadow Pack Station and Resort will be open for business beginning Friday, June 18. Access to their facilities will be made available to their customers by appointment only.
Mandatory shuttle service will also commence on Thursday, June 24, and operate through Wednesday, September 8, 2010. Shuttles will depart from the Main Lodge every 20 minutes during peak times and 30-45 minutes during off-peak times. The first shuttle will depart the Main Lodge at 7:30 a.m. Shuttles depart from The Village to the Main Lodge at 7:15, 8:00, 8:45, 9:15, 10:05 and 11:05 a.m.
Motorists are urged to use caution, drive slowly, and watch for wildlife!
