Shasta in general, Konwokitan in particular

by AriehDavid » Fri Dec 23, 2011 7:55 am

Hi there forum peeps,

So, what's the situation over in Mt. Shasta? It's been the lowest rainfall for Dec. in 120 years here on the northcoast of California. Has anyone been up there recently?

In particular, anyone known anything about the Konwokitan Glacier route?

Thanks!

Thanks a bunch buddy. That is another climb that just went on my mental ticklist which I'll prolly never get around to doing.

The Konwokitan ends in two different spurs, both of which are pretty steep and heavily crevassed and either variation would be the crux of the glacier. Either strand would also be the most dangerous section as all of the potential rockfall or avalanching would pass through these chokes, so you should plan pacing such that you are starting these sections at first light at the latest and finish them early.

Either spur can best be approached by traversing straight over from either the small glacier on Sargents Ridge or from Cascade Creek.

Just came back from Ava Gulch. It's all white, but there is very little of fresh snow, just enough to give the color. Mostly, it's last year snow covered with a thick crust of ice. New accumulation starts above red banks, but it is not snow either. It's like a field of horizontal icicles - looks surreal and pain to walk on.
Bottom line, climeable, but the snow fields around the hart is a no fall zone.
Casaval is definitely not in - bare scree most of the way.

Sorry, no info on other routes.

Thanks for all the info. I am aware of Konwokiton's severity. I've been up Hotlum Glacier, Hotlum/Bolam ridge, etc. Summitted SHasta 5 times. Anyway, it was clearly not in shape earlier, but it looks to be ideal now. Also ridge climbs are in.

If someone is down, PM me.

Did you go? I was told the ridges were rock and definitely not in.
