When we passed through Boulderfield, quite a few people had left packs. Just don't leave any food.

I leave my tent and any gear not needed for the summit at my basecamp all the time. You will rarely have any problems with humans. I figure if someone is going to hike in that far to steal my tent or bag, they must need it more than I do. On the plus side, your pack would be lighter on the way down if something did happen :D
