Unaweep Canyon Questions?

by dakotaconcrete » Wed Sep 23, 2009 4:31 am

I've travelled through Unaweep Canyon several times now, and each time I gaze at the canyon's southern formations.

Are those formations named mountains?or are they even considered mountains? Regardless, does anyone know if there are any established routes?or does anyone know if any of those areas can be accessed by the public or are they private property?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

To get you started, yes, there are a number of formations that qualify as mountains along Unaweep Canyon. For example, check out this listsofjohn page on The Palisade, with some photos and trip reports.

If you want to browse for more, you might start by looking at this page on the Gateway Quad. From here, you can click on the link to see the map of Gateway quad peaks. Or, you can click on the adjacent quadrangles, following the canyon to the NE and then check out those maps and individual peaks.

Good luck!

I'm not sure about the peaks but the climbing in Unaweep is fantastic! Mountainproject might be able to answer some of your access questions even though it only addresses technical climbing areas. http://mountainproject.com/v/colorado/grand_junction/unaweep_canyon/105744400

The "mtns" you are refering to are just cliff bands. At least, that's what it sounds like what you are looking at based on your description of what you are looking at. Yes, they are all named....and yes, almost all have routes on them. Get KC Blaum's guidebook for Unaweep for access to them (some are easy....some are very confusing). Just FYI, the book was published a while ago and access may have changed (some for the better...some not). Get ahold of local shops in GJ if you are confused.
