Upcoming meetings re: mountain sustainability

by jrbouldin » Fri Sep 14, 2007 8:05 pm

Two upcoming meetings, FYI:

1 The Alps beyond Kyoto (Saint-Vincent, Aosta, Italy, 20-22 September 2007):

The International Commission for the Protection of the Alps (CIPRA) is organizing ‘The Alps beyond Kyoto’ -- an international conference on energy efficiency and renewable energies in the Alpine region. CIPRA firmly believes that the Alps have the potential to become a model region in climate terms. Indeed, with a cost-conscious approach to energy and the intelligent use of existing renewable energies (wood, water, sun, wind and geothermal energy), the Alpine regions could easily improve on the CO2 reduction targets set as part of the Kyoto Protocol. The Conference is structured in three parts: discussion on each individual source of renewable energy, their significance today in the Alpine region, and their potential; debate on policy instruments for reducing energy consumption, for example incentives and legislation in the area of energy-efficient construction and renovation; and identification of examples of good practice. For more details on this event, visit the CIPRA Web site.

2. Managing Alpine Future: Strategies for sustainability in times of change. Innsbruck, October 15-17.

"Due to climate change and effects of globalisation, increased dynamics in the natural as well as human environment are to be expected in mountain regions within the next years and decades. On the one hand, global change can no longer be ignored and denied, on the other hand, it cannot be reversed anymore on a short-term basis. It is, however, possible, to reduce its impacts by future-oriented political, institutional and personal actions. Representatives from science, industry and public authorities are to analyse the present state and especially the expected future developments by means of eight core topics. Approaches, strategies and solutions in dealing with these dynamic processes are going to be identified and discussed on both a transnational and transdisciplinary level. Inter alia, the impact of climate change on mountain biosphere reserves will be addressed. Furthermore, it is intended that all the participants agree on a statement concerning future active cooperation."
