Karl h.
Nice shot. I used to rock climb in the storm mountain aria of B.C.C a few times a month and never had such an encounter.

Takanhase, The next day I went back and saw, through binoc's, a group of four more. They were about 1500' higher than I was. No time to climb that day, I had to fly back to Portland.......... I too was in the Big Cottonwood Canyon.

Well, they're nothing special except I saw them in Los Angeles whilst hiking with ShortTimer...a truly adorable little gopher sticking his head out of his hole and wiggling his nose and a baby bunny stumbling around the trail a few yards further down. No matter how many housing developments they build, the bunnies and gophers won't give up!

Today, Nadie and me went mountain biking in Monte de El Pardo, Madrid. She lost her gloves so later I drove looking for them. Sometimes I stoped and did short walks. I could see a squirrel, a heron, two partridges and a bird of prey that I couldn't recognize. I think that I could see so much animals because it was lunch time and it was rainy so nobody was there. Note that Monte de El Pardo is close to Madrid

On the top of Mt. Melissa in the Wallowas (in the very northeast corner of the Wallowas), we saw thousands upon thousands of lady bugs in big piles crawling all over the rocks.

Today, Nadie and me have seen a "culebra de escalera" (Elaphe scalaris) while mountain biking in Monte de El Pardo, Madrid. It was dying so it hardly didn't move, I noticed that because its mouth was bloody. A woman who was walking there didn't dare to pass near it and turned back in her way. Though I've known those snakes aren't poisonous they are very aggresive and brave. I took it out of the trail with a stick and we continued mountain biking. The woman could pass in front of the snake then

I was licked in the face by a brown bear youngster in the San Gabriel mountains of Southern California in the spring of 2003. I was sleeping under the stars when I had a strange feeling that my dog was licking me...in an instant I realized I was not at home and THAT WAS NOT MY DOG!!! I jumped up and ran one way and the bear ran the other. We both stopped and turned after about 20 ft each and looked at each other for a minute. The bear continued on - I suppose taking great comfort in knowing that he had scarred me forever with regard to sleeping outside. Now everytime I do - I keep one eye open and wake up at every sound...

I saw this on my approach to Mt Ritter & Banner last Memorial Day weekend when I hiked in on the closed road.

Not quite a wild animal, but still an odd form of life to see in the backcountry . . .
