Drove up on a soul searching trip
Did the northern slopes route through the devils playground. Got some donuts at the top and had a great 4th of July.
Did this in 2 days with an overnight in a lean to at Barr Camp. My dad came along and we took the train down from the top.
I started from Devil's Playground, but it was still 3 miles up with over 1100 feet of elevation gain, so I'm counting it.
4th fourteener. Fantastic weather!
Hiked in Sat. morning from Manitou Ave because the main parking lot was full, adding another mile at least. Hiked with a full pack to Barr Camp and camped across the way. Met some nice hikers and woke up the next day, hit the trail at 6:30 AM. Made the summit around 10:40AM, back to Barr Camp for the night by 2:30PM. Hiked back out to the car. 28 miles RT with 7,800' of elevation gain.
Started at 410 AM, summit at 1030 AM. Fifty minute break on top eating food in the mob scene cafeteria and then a five hour descent to get back to my car in the power plant parking lot at 425 PM. The summit parking area had three cars with antifreeze spraying out of them but with the views, I can see why people make the climb/drive. It was well worth it, especially on such a nice day.
Nice hike up to summit.
Drove up the road. Stepped on the highest rock and found the benchmark.
Made it to the summit from the Barr trailhead in 5.5hrs. Summit was cold and cloudy so no view. Got up there at 8:15 so no doughnuts either :( my knee bothered me my whole descent and made it take a lot longer
Took this route due to the Barr trail being to long for my time constraints
A strong wind-chill (-20F) turned us around 1,000' below Pikes Peak summit. Light fresh snow true to forecast gave us good winter climbing in April! Our buffs froze solid, with stinging ice chips in the incessant >45mph winds, contributed to a turn around or face frost-bite. Broke trail the entire way.
Climbed Barr trail once and the y-couloir once. Want to go back up via the hero traverse in the winter to avoid the crowds at the summit.
1968. My first Colorado 14er. Rode up with my family when I was 8 years old.
Twice from Crags
May be my least favorite summit. Tourists even in winter.
Hiked the whole Barr trail through the night and into the morning - a long day without sleep, but it was a great hike anyway!
Great day to hike. Ran out of water about treeline and drank from the springs at the staircase, reupped at the summit with fat tourists gawking at this "mountaineer." Had a nice jog back down in the rain. saw some Mountain goats near treeline.
With the fam as a youngster.
Auto race occurring on ascent, then joined by crowds from cog railway on top. This was the most food I've ever consumed on a 14er but made it back to Crags CG despite that.
