Not the Easiest  Sucess!

Nice hike on a really nice day. Would ahve to disagree with people that say this is the easiest 14er. I think Sherman and Bierstadt are both easier.

Nice Day  Sucess!

Walked up east ridge. Lots of folks for a Monday. Nice day and good views, although almost got caught by a storm on the way down... it was close!

Quandary East Ridge to West Ridge  Sucess!

Ascended east slopes after being forced to descend on the west ridge due to ice a month ago. Only two people ahead of us, more than 50 behind us. Descended west ridge to find all snow and ice is melted out.

Watch out for goats!  Sucess!

Found a mountain goat at the very summit. Think he was looking for the ski lift.

better late...  Sucess!

...than never. Really guessing about the actual date. Climbed it again in August 1995. My first fourteener in '75, and still my only winter one. My wife's third (I believe) when we climbed together in '95. East ridge route from Montgomery Res. TH the first time, same route from McCullough Gulch the second.

East Ridge- The Best Winter Climb  Sucess!

East Ridge Climb is great as it is wind swept and usually safe approach. I have skied this often picking through the rocks in the middle section. The Cristo is good in spring. Seeems like everytime I come back from doing the East Ridge, some idiots die on the Cristo. Don't get me wrong I love BC riding and pow...It's just not worth my life. beacons don't make you safe. Rdges help.

Springtime Snow Ascent  Sucess!

Our group of six had a fun ascent while it snowed hard on the Mountain the first part of May. Two out of six of us summited.

Ski Descent  Sucess!

I spent most of the day post holing, which was really frustrating. I got through it and made it to the top. It was a nice and easy ski descent.

Fourth Fourteener  Sucess!

Nice trail for somebody like me who is new to fourteeners. Parking situation at Monte Cristo Gulch is really frustrating and the crowds can be overwhelming, but still a nice hike.

Climbed with Son  Sucess!

My third fourteener and my 11-year-old son's second. We started at 5:40AM and were the second group on the mountain. We reached the peak by 9:00AM and spent 30 minutes on the top, the fourth group up there. On the way down we encountered probably 200 people. We were back to the trailhead a few minutes after noon. It started raining by 1:00PM. I would think a lot of folks got rained on. Like always, start early!

First 14'er  Sucess!

Started at 6:45am with about 6 other cars in the parking area. The trail is a well beated path up to the talus field, which seems to go on forever. Had a brief spell of rain, which gave way to blue skies. Dark clouds threatened as we approached the summit with about 1,000ft to go, but blew over. Took us three hours to summit, keep in mind we're flatlanders from Minnesota. There was no snow to speak of on the East Slopes Trail, very windy and chilly up on top, stopped for about 20 minutes before heading back down. The wildflowers seemed to be in full bloom and we had great views on the way down. Total time up and down was 6 hours, which included a few stops and photo ops. Beta available online at the Arapahoe National Forest ranger station in Dillon, CO, on Hwy. 6 in Silverthorne and also online at their web site. Happy Trails.

Great Climb!  Sucess!

Another great 14'er hike in God's country! The weather was a bit cloudy and cool (45-50 degrees) for a 7:30 AM start. The trail up was straight forward through the trees to above tree line and my first overall view of Quandary. There weren't too many people ahead of me (fortunately) - it took about 2 hours to summit and shared the summit with 5 people and 1 dog. After 45 minutes on top enjoying the low cloud formations and viewing the people train nearing the summit, I decided to start down. Still amazes me to see people not too prepared for the mountains - jeans, cotton t-shirts, little food/water, etc. Trip down was uneventful other than watching the building clouds for a storm that never materialized. Another great hike - back to the mountains after 4th of July!

Want something different? Try the West Ridge. Very worth it.

Busy but enjoyable  Sucess!

Extremely busy, I think we passed a crew of 30 people all at once at one point during the hike. Pretty enjoyable and some nice scenery, but all of the loose rock got annoying after a while (seemed like there was more of this than other fourteeners I've done so far).
