Climbed and skied the East ridge of Quandary March 12. Conditions were hard windpacked sastrugi up high and frozen slushy snow down lower. Conditions may have changed as weather was blowing in.
Skinned up the East ridge under clear and windless skies. Skied the standard East ridge down, only booted a short section on the flat ridge due to rocks. Good coverage top to bottom, snow was windpacked up high and sticky sunbaked powder below.
brought out lots of the cronies....jamie, sarah, dominic and mike for a winter climb of quandary.
horribly windy but we pushed on through the rough stuff to a wind shadow on the summit! great feeling sitting there knowing that i completed the tenmile/mosquito range fourteeners in calendar winter with lots of friends along.
CLIMBED E RIDGE WITH MY WIFE FOR HER FIRST 14ER
Hiked the East Slopes from Lower McCullough Gulch Trailhead. This was my first 14er.
Skied from the summit to the car with one patch of rocks I had to walk around 12,500 or so. Very windy day, but the wind did help deposit some soft snow along the ridge for some good turns!
summited via the standard east ridge route. Some maps designate 2 trailheads. The lower of the two is marked and on this day was lined with vehicles. The upper TH is not marked, but on this day there was only 1 other car so we started out from there. I counted 40 heads on the summit. Someone should open a concession stand up there.
Fun climb, had to turn around just below 13,000 due to no visibility and high winds, Ill be back though
otherwise a nice winter climb
This was my 27th climb of Quandary. I wore snowshoes for the round trip. The snow was firm on the way up, and became spring soft on the way down. It was sunny with a SW wind.
This was the first of many climbs of Quandary. It has become an annual tradition to glissade down the Cristo couloir. On May 27, 01 I got married on top of Quandary and then the wedding party glissaded down.
First successful 14er. Great first climb.
Climbed West Ridge route with Lee
1st 14er. Went well, except was super windy. I think I need to gain some weight (and I am not a petite girl), b/c the wind kept pushing me around.
1st on summit - good climb too bad I could not ski down
Not certain as to the date but close enough.
Very clear summer day, you could see 15 other 14'ers.
Earliest I have ever hiked a 14er. There was still quite a bit of snow on the summit. We were afraid we'd be posthollng through the snow but it was still firm enough that wasn't really a problem. Sure made it fun coming down. Just sit down and away you go!!!
It was a hot, sunny day. At the summit people were quite comfortable just in shorts and t-shirts. Beautiful panoramic views. Ran out of water on the way down because it was so hot. Now I carry much more water than I think necessary because running out of water, even for a short time, is no fun.
Kelly and I started hiking up on compacted snow. The day was cloudy and windless.
Kelly got AMS just 20 minutes below the summit. So she started heading down while I ran up to the summit. Spent two minutes at the top, and I headed back to catch up with Kelly 5 minutes later.
