Remains of a forest, with Končistá (2538m) in the background

In 2004, a freak storm struck down large parts of the forest in the Tatras, and few trees survived the disaster. The result was still clear to see When I visited, though new vegetation is taking hold. It will take many years before it's a mature forest again, but nature is resilient and I'm optimistic about the future of the Tatras. Kalamita...

On 18th November there's gonna be 12 years since that wind disaster on Tatra southern slopes... Still painful when one remembers how the area looked like before, but from year to year things are getting better.

Re: Kalamita...

Nature is bouncing back already. Of course it will take a long time for new trees to reach maturity, but in the mean time there is an abundance of other vegetation that wouldn't have much of a chance in the dark environment of a thick forest. One can mourn what was, or celebrate what is. It's different, but still pretty (and I appreciated all the raspberries).

Re: Kalamita...

All good. At least we're gonna have natural, not planted woods there soon, though spruce bark beetle infestation all around Tatras is another story...
