Round Top  Sucess!

Solo hike, via Carson Pass, from the trailhead on a very very windy day this is a fairly easy route, beautiful scenery, lakes and partly because of the wind crystal clear and amazing views. This took me about 4.5 hours with a swim, meal break, and a side excursion.

from Carson Pass  Sucess!

via WInnemucca Lake and Round Top Lake, then up the scree slopes and past the false summit. To cross the notch to the true, eastern, summit, just scrambled down the righthand rocky scree slope to the notch and crossed up a small ramp to a hidden gully with solid third class rock holds to the summit.

Clear sunny day with excellent views.

Knife's edge, north ridge route

Climbed up the north ridge. There were some point releases along the route but no red flags. Reached the top of knife's edge. Seemed like a harder ascent afterwards so saving it for some rope/anchor practice :)

With The Sisters and Fourth of July Peak  Sucess!

3X for Round Top. Really fun hike, from Carson Pass went up to Round Top, then retraced back to the saddle and went up to both of The Sisters, then traversed some fun class 2/3 and some steep scree slopes to the saddle at Fourth of July Peak. Fourth of July was a bit of a slog up a decent use trail, after the excitement of the other peaks it didn't quite measure up. Took the trail all the way back to Carson Pass from Fourth of July. TR is HERE.

Carson Pass Warm Winter Afternoon  Sucess!

The dogs and I started from Carson Pass around noon. The warm winter made for barren south faces, but a very supportive 1-3 foot snowpack elsewhere above 8,000 feet.  Despite all but the rocky summit scramble of this hike being snow covered, I was glad I chose trail runners rather than boots and snowshoes.  I did make some use of microspikes and trekking poles, especially when opting to bypass the gentle routes that went west toward Round Top Lake, instead venturing directly up the steep, icy terrain above/southwest of Winnemucca Lake.  Eventually I met the easy west ridge route at about 10,200 feet, right at the base of the west ridge and south face scrambles.  The warm, calm day made for a nice break at the summit.  A bit jealous of all the ski and snowboard tracks in the bowls, I made sure to enjoy some glissades on the way down.  We ended up having the area to ourselves for the afternoon after passing near the last party of other people prior to reaching Winnemucca Lake on the way up.

On a windy day  Sucess!

West ridge route- A very enjoyable climb. Even with a 30-35 mph wind.
The 30-40' downclimb off of the east peak was a little tougher than expected. Every hold had to be tested without exception.

Short day with thunderstorms  Sucess!

Was in the neighborhood so planned on dropping in for a visit and wanted to tag The Sisters after, but thunderstorms chased me down after summitting Round Top. 2nd time up to Round Top so I should have reversed the order since now I still have to go back some day to get The Sisters. TR is HERE

Epic and Unexpected  Sucess!

Decided to leave Reno spontaneously last night to climb something in the Sierras. Found Round Top on maps not too far away and headed out to the grocery store to supply up. Left at 12am arrived at 1:30 at the trailhead. Camped right there no issues whatsoever and started at 12pm the next day. Super easy route, a lot of beautiful scenery, lakes everywhere, and crystal clear views. Not a bad day at all! True summit had two marker one from 1925 and the other '73/'79. Less than 4 hours round trip including a long lunch break/swim.

Windy!  Sucess!

Went up to the West Ridge from Carson Pass (via Winnemucca Lake and Round Top Lake — actually I cut off the corner and didn't visit RT Lake until after I descended). No snow to deal with, but when I got to the saddle, I almost didn't go any further because the wind from the south was vicious and I was worried about keeping my balance. When I got to the western "summit," I ditched my backpack and my trekking poles and continued on to the east. The wind was still horrible, but I felt a little better without the extra drag! I didn't see the SummitPost recommendation to go around and then climb the SE side; instead, I climbed up the SW side of the east summit. It was definitely Class 4.

(Without the wind, my headline would have been "Fun Scramble.")
