From Bighorn, descended back to The Tarn, then took gully straight up to San G summit, intercepting the trail coming from Mineshaft Saddle and bypassing it. Fabulous steep slope, gains 1000' in half a mile!
Put in first tracks all the way to the summit. Snow was waist deep in some places. Awesome!
Went and tagged Dragon's Head on the way back. Beat my best time to the summit by over 20 minutes too.
Hiked starting via the South Fork@5:45AM Went through the Dollar Lake Path. Summited around 12:30PM. My friend carried up the sign the Mt. San Gorgonio 11,503 with our initials on it. 6hrs to descend. It was very cloudy and we had no vision at the summit.
Camped at Vivian Creek the night before heading up. A local bear got into my stashed pack at the base, but a beautiful view from the summit!
Took the scramble route from Mineshaft Saddle up the north-east ridge dragging my twin brother up and down. Sunny and mild but very dry. Way better if done in the snow by the looks of it.
Long day hike from Fish Creek TH to summit but it was a nice day for it, sunny and cool. There is no snow left. It was pretty windy on top (maybe 25mph), air temp about 50 F (colder with wind chill). I used both fleece and shell to keep warm after getting to the summit. Lots of backpackers were competing for sites at Fish Creek Saddle but I didn't see anyone at Mine Shaft Flats.
straightforward but long trail. Only saw one person all day. Interesting plane crash site along the trail. The road to the trailhead probably warrants a high clearance vehicle. The summit itself is broad and somewhat unexciting but good views of the north side of San Jacinto. No snow at all. The trail is almost never steep and would be good for a trail run.
Big group for big hike, but loved the challenge. Good distance training (24 mi), decent elev. gain and a perfect summer day.
In depth trip report below.
Second ascent, on a perfect summer day in SoCal.
First ascent - chased down by a summer thunderstorm.
Used San Gorgonio as a practice run for Whitney a few years back, and in some ways found it more challenging. Made it to the summit and back in one day, what a long hike!
With brother Jon
pleasant spring hike - still was snow on upper areas.
summer snow slog via south fork up the north face
Got off to a late start which was a mistake since it was memorial day weekend and all the Vivian creek permits were taken up. At that point had to change the route and settled on taking the south fork trail and then dollar lake trail to summit. With a very late start time I had to really book it up the mountain, but it was great walking over the crest... just me and greyback. Felt spiritually re-charged after this hike.
Hiked Gorgie a few weeks after doing Mt. Whitney so it was pretty boring in comparison, but still enjoyable. Weather was perfect.
2 night backpacking trip. Camped at lodgepole spring the first night and stayed on the summit the 2nd night. Awesome Experience!
hiked this without permit (sorry) in preparation for Whitney next week. Missed a turn off and added 45 minutes to my 11 hour hike. great accomplishment, gotta do again in the snow.
