Yep, most of the mountains in this part of the state are volcanic. Just a few miles north of my house is Cedar Mountain, a volcano. To the north are the Elkheads, and all are volcanic. To the south are the Flat Tops, made entirely of volcanics.
The lake is named for Steamboat Springs. They are hot springs and the old timers called the place Steamboat Springs because the steam shooting out sounded like a steamboat.
Thanks for your thorough description and your invaluable scouting work. Nice and useful pictures. I could not find the Elkheads in Jacobs and Ormes, except for Hahns Peak, which, however, they place in the northern Park Range.

Yep, the Elkheads have been mostly bypassed by all the guidebooks. I guess that's a good reason to include them here.

Untitled CommentAlways nice to see Colorado's obscure peaks getting added to SP. Lots of good info here.

I hope you mean "lots of good info here", hee hee.
Thanks for the vote. The Elkheads are some nice mountains, but they have been bypassed by the guidebooks and crowds. Its a good place for solitude.
