Thanks for the pics

I found it interesting that you and I were in the Cuchara area during the same time frame...Sept 2003. I was there on Sept 20/21. I had time for only a quick run through the area but did get some photo shoots accomplished. Since you're a photog by profession (I guess), I have a couple of night shot ideas I'd like to get done sometime. I've been shooting film (35mm) since 1978 and like doing night shots. I know it's easy to do, it's just slightly time consuming. Perhaps by combining talents, we could get some good results. I'm also into astrophotography.

Re: Thanks for the pics

what are your ideas for night shots? My time in the mountains is always very limited, usually a climb or two with photos on the way up or down. I shoot 35mm film also. I carry an Olympus OM-1N manual SLR. I have enjoyed your many different views of the area, especially the Dog Bar which I visit at least once each trip to Cuchara Valley. Regards......SBS

Re: Thanks for the pics

I know what you mean about time limitation while in the mtns, the same pretty much applies to me too. The most ambitious nightshot project I'd like to accomplish is to get the 4WD Trichera Road traced out by using vehicle headlights which would require a 4WD vehicle which I (unfortunately) don't own. Using two-way communcation would be a plus, or at least a good idea. My cameras are old Pentax. One is an MX, the other a KX.

Two different possible camera locations: one on top of the unnamed 11,144 peak overlooking Blue Lake (I have a daytime shot of this but the road's not discernable), and the second would be from the ridge which juts out from the unnamed 12,955 peak just north of Trinchera. The second may be questionable due to the viewing angle of the lower portion of the road.

Other easier projects include (1)shooting from the base of Trinchera just above treeline looking back towards Blue Lake and Cuchara; (2)overlooking the Cucharas Valley from the ridge north and east of Bear Lake or from the top of the not-used ski resort; (3)shooting the San Luis Valley from the saddle on the north side of Trinchera; (4)from the ridge approaching West Spanish Peak shooting north towards LaVeta and southeast towards Trinidad/Raton Pass. Using just the right amount of moonlight could get some good exposures and still allow the stars to visibly trail.

I know this all sounds like quite a lot...............

Re: Thanks for the pics

I do not own a 4 wheel drive vehicle either. I might be able to try some of the other photo ideas if I can visit the area during a time of sufficient moonlight.

Re: Thanks for the pics

Bill, After looking at my Trinchera topo map I noticed a point 11,688 on the county line NE of Trinchera. This point may give a view of much of the basin 4 wheel drive road for your idea of a night shot tracing headlights. Have you visited this un-named summit? If not I may be able to hike up there in late June as an acclimatizing trip on my way to climb Horn Peak and others up in the Sangres in the Wet Mt. valley. From the junction in the forest I would just follow the trail towards Purgatorie CG, turn east(left) at trail heading NE across tundra. It looks like a short bushwhack should be all that is required and the map shows a small area on top to be timber free?? If I can get up there I'll take some test shots, probably a fairly wide angle lens will be needed. SBS
