Sunrise in the Alps

Sunrise in the Alps

We've just started for the day, from Capanna Margherita, and are now on Colle Gnifetti (4452m), the high saddle between Signalkuppe and Zumsteinspitze. Our goal? The two rocky summits on the left, Dufourspitze and Nordend. But to get there, we first have to traverse the Zumsteinspitze, the (mostly) snowy peak furthest on the left, and then cross the Grenzsattle. That's dangerously small ridge, with enormous exposure to the east and a fairly steep drop to the west. The problem is that it often either has too much snow, making it dangerously corniced, or too little, making it icy. Fortunately, we had heard that the ridge was in fine shape - if not, we wouldn't even have tried it. 7 July 2013.
