The Pine Creek Valley

The Pine Creek Valley

Looking up the Pine Creek Valley from Pine Rock Ledge on the Bob Webber Trail. The Bob Webber trails is just below Slate Run, PA and offers some great views of the area just to the south of the PA Grand Canyon. September 2006. The two peaks in the distance are Half Dome (left) and Hemlock Mountain (right). The incredible Black Forest Trail runs to the top of Hemlock Mountain and offers great views as well.

My first

solo backpacking trip was on the West Rim Trail in the late fall of 1988. It poured rain and I remember trying to build a small fire in my metal mess kit to cook over (inside my vesitbule). I nearly smoked myself out my own tent. The gorge is probably the most beautiful spot in Penn. when the weather is clear. You captured it nicely.

Re: My first

Thanks! I've had some similar moments on the West Rim Trail, but the views are worth it. I agree with your opinions about the Gorge as well. Doesn't get any better for PA.

I've been there

Once again, this picture is hanging on my bathroom wall. . . . the Pine Creek Gorge; my favorite spot in the whole world. I don't even care that it has no giant mountains or technical climbs. Backpacking the 'rugged' Black Forest Trail in 49 hours is about as good as it gets.
