Don't forget the weight of the backpacks! I reckon that it impaired our manoeuvrability more than the clumsiness of "Beskid" skies...

A few years back I actually installed the vintage Kharkov bindings (a knockoff of the 50s Silveretta adjustibles) and tried them. The lack of control was truly amazing! And we skied all that shit like the Ural hard slabs with them. No wonder it took a lot of booting and cramponing on what looks like a ski terrain - or at best kick turning like in this picture :)
